Giant Inflatable Flower Lamps 'Warde' at Vallero Square, Jerusalem

In urban spaces, streetlights serve not only for illumination but also as distinctive landmarks. Beyond lighting, they can do much more. Today we introduce the giant flower lamp Warde, which not only provides smart lighting but also offers shade and rain cover for pedestrians.

Warde is located at Vallero Square in central Jerusalem, a creation of HQ Architects. To organize the urban space and distinguish Vallero Square (surrounded by a waste treatment plant and a power plant) from other areas, they erected four giant inflatable flower lamps, adding an outdoor landmark to the city of Jerusalem.

The four 30-foot-tall streetlights resemble blood-red poppy flowers, striking from any angle in the city. Beneath the ground lies the power supply system, which feeds the air pumps and lighting system at the 'calyx' through thick 'flower stems'. Air is drawn in from the pump outlets and inflates the flowers. These giant lamps can sense pedestrians: when someone passes by or stops, the airflow at the base changes, causing the flower to automatically inflate and open; when the person leaves, it deflates and closes. When a tram is about to arrive, they open to welcome passengers alighting. In summer, they serve as excellent shade; on rainy days, they provide cover.
