Methods for Evaluating Public Relations Planning Cases
Public relations planning cases are one of the important ways to reflect the business capability of a PR company. So, how should we analyze and evaluate PR planning cases?
1. Make the case description more concrete: Generally, PR planning case materials cover main contents such as project research, project strategy, project implementation, and project effects. Since readers of the materials (such as judges/experts) have not had the opportunity to participate in the event itself, evaluating whether a case is selected mainly relies on the descriptions in the materials submitted by the applicant, combined with their own prior experience (a priori experience), based on intuition. For example, for project effects, current data mainly includes monitoring surface data such as report volume, exposure volume, and interaction volume, but lacks in-depth analysis of topics, feature words, hotspots, etc. Therefore, the current evaluation of PR effects mainly stays at the "output" of PR, and the depiction of "results" needs improvement. For instance, analysis of audience sentiment discourse, situational analysis, tendency analysis, and behavioral trajectory and tendency before and after communication; in addition, adding a Q&A session to determine whether a case can be selected would enhance the depth of insight into the content, whether this Q&A is face-to-face in reality or uses video/audio to cross space.
2. Enhance realism in evaluation methods: PR planning case materials involve various industries, so the forms of submission are diverse. How to conduct a non-a priori rational evaluation of case content is an obstacle that selectors need to overcome; if case content is combined with annual development and event characteristics, it will enhance its realism, making it easier to comprehensively, deeply, and objectively understand the project situation.
3. Highlight differences in the scope of case selection: The rapid development of IT, network, and other technologies has caused profound changes in the theory and practical operation of the PR and communication industry; this transformation will also be reflected in periodically held PR case competitions; there are differences in the characteristics and development of applications in different fields and industries, so the scope of cases can be more differentiated, such as selecting separately from corporate PR departments and PR companies in different industries, government agencies and financial PR, medical and health industries, and the public sector.
4. Place more emphasis on practical abilities in evaluation criteria: From the descriptive materials of PR planning cases, increasing the weight of PR and communication behavioral abilities such as summarizing and refining in actual combat will help PR industry practitioners actively improve their behavioral talents in actual work, such as: enhancing the imaginative ability to grasp behaviors in an intuitive and complex environment; strengthening the intellectual ability to synthesize and generalize the concept of a project in an intuitive and complex background; improving the judgment ability to present the object contained in this concept in the intuitive and complex; the accumulation of these three abilities will provide a catalyst for the formation of an innovative and flourishing environment in PR.
