Detailed Classification of Event Planning

Published: 2026-08-04

Event planning can generally be divided into the following three types:

1. Marketing-Oriented Event Planning

These events primarily aim at profit and sales, with brand promotion as a secondary goal. Examples include the 2002 China Southern Auto Show, the 2002 National Day Real Estate Exhibition, and the First Guangdong Entrepreneurs vs. Chinese Football Stars Match. While enhancing the organizer's brand awareness, these events focus more on generating direct economic returns through ticket sales and advertising. For instance, the 2002 China Southern Auto Show alone generated hundreds of thousands of yuan in ticket revenue, and combined with pre- and post-event newspaper advertising, achieved significant marketing results. The characteristic of such events is that they have strong appeal, attracting the attention of customers and consumers.

2. Communication-Oriented Event Planning

These events center on brand promotion, with profit and sales as secondary. Examples include the large-scale hepatitis B science consultation and free clinic event, the Nobel Economics Laureate's Guangdong Tour, the community movie roadshow, the concept fashion show and client networking event, and the Chinese-language Film Media Awards. Such events focus on promoting the media image, showcasing logos and layout images through backdrops, brochures, posters, white papers, and gifts. Additionally, the participation of media leaders in opening, award, lucky draw, or closing ceremonies often creates a striking effect.

3. Hybrid Event Planning

These events combine both marketing and communication objectives, aiming to boost sales and enhance brand image simultaneously. Examples include the 2002 Guangdong Communication Festival, the China Wine Industry Fortune Forum, and the World Chinese Advertising Forum. Participation in such events typically requires clients to place advertisements or readers to purchase newspapers (e.g., by cutting out coupons), and the events themselves are accompanied by large-scale brand promotion. In the context of increasingly intense competition in the media market, media organizations will increasingly play the role of enterprises, and marketing-oriented and hybrid event planning will become key areas of future development.
