Key Points in Festival Event Planning

Published: 2022-12-13

Festival events are an important part of folk culture. The formation of each festival event showcases the splendid culture, long history, and unique features of a region or an ethnic group. Festival events are carriers of cultural phenomena; without cultural connotation, they cease to exist. From China's Spring Festival, Western Christmas, and worldwide carnivals, to Tunisia's Desert Festival and China's Harbin Ice and Snow Festival, all are imbued with profound cultural significance. Festival events are a comprehensive reflection of ethnic culture, folk culture, and commercial culture.

The purpose of festival event planning is to enhance visibility, and it can also be developed as a tourism product element to attract domestic and international business visitors for inspections, trade negotiations, and sightseeing. However, from a sustainable development perspective, the roots and soul of these events must be carefully considered.

Traditional festival event planning should maintain authenticity and seriousness. As traditional cultural events, whether ethnic, folk, or religious, they should preserve their authenticity and seriousness. Only then can they become activities that are welcomed and recognized by both locals and tourists, take root among the people, remain attractive, and endure over time.

Festival event planning should emphasize uniqueness. As events developed based on local products and other conditions, their uniqueness and ability to generate tourism appeal must be considered. One should not organize events just because there are resources available, nor imitate what others are doing; otherwise, festival events will become similar in content, form, and product homogeneity, ultimately failing to last.

Festival event planning should enhance cultural depth. The key lies in creativity. Cultural depth should not be simply understood as "entertainment performances," but rather that tourists gain cultural perception through participation, increasing their knowledge and interest. For out-of-town and international tourists, they should experience cultural differences; for locals, it should enhance their cultural awareness and pride. Festival event planning is not purely political; it must include entertainment. Even political events should create a more peaceful and harmonious atmosphere, increase public participation, and allow participants to understand the political intent through involvement.

Festival event planning should consider timing. Festival events should add brilliance to tourism development, and more importantly, provide timely support. Whether transforming traditional festivals into tourism events or creating new ones based on local conditions, sustainability must be maintained. Some events cannot be arbitrarily scheduled in terms of time and place. In reality, most festival events are currently concentrated in the best tourism season, making local tourism activities more colorful and the peak season even busier. How to use festival events to balance seasonal tourism differences is a more worthwhile issue to explore. Especially when creating new events and cultural activities less constrained by climate, they should be scheduled during the off-season or shoulder season whenever conditions permit, which is more meaningful for regional tourism development.

Festival event planning should focus on industrial integration. For tourism development, festival events are often treated as an attraction or merely as a public relations activity to raise visibility, which is insufficient. They should be carefully designed and managed with a long-term perspective. The more successful a festival event, the less it should rely solely on government investment, and ticket sales should not be the primary source of income. The Weifang Kite Festival in Shandong, with a long history, turned a small town into a major domestic kite exporter, closely linking kite art, technology, culture, and kite making and trade. Qingdao's Beer Festival is a typical example of a product-based tourism festival, combining beer tasting, drinking competitions, beer trading, beer culture, beer revelry, and related shopping and dining experiences, making it a highlight of the city's tourism.

Modern festival events also arise to meet the needs of building both material and spiritual civilization in China's new era, to promote modernization, and to further expand reform and opening up. Therefore, they are products of the times, of socialist modernization, and of reform and opening up. Historical and practical development requires festival events, and this phenomenon will advance with the times. As the era progresses and reform and opening up deepen, the number of festival events will inevitably increase, their scale will grow, and their effects will improve.
