Strategies for Leveraging and Creating Momentum in Event Promotion

Published: 2022-12-13

"It's not about how much money you have, but how much heart you put in." This is the guiding principle for event promotion. The result of genuine effort is that the media will do free promotion for you again and again.

The Great Barrier Reef recruitment campaign captured global media attention for Queensland Tourism not primarily because of advertising spend, but because they truly put in the effort and skillfully employed a key methodology in promotional planning: leveraging and creating momentum. Amid the global economic crisis, they launched an enticing plan to "earn big money while on vacation," successfully piquing the interest of people and media worldwide.

Leveraging and creating momentum, simply put, means seeking and creating opportunities, taking corresponding actions to expand results, and consolidating and developing a favorable situation. Its function is to use all subjective and objective conditions to create a competitive advantage for oneself. "Momentum" can be understood as timing, opportunity, situation, trend, and advantage. Leveraging and creating momentum is like "rolling a round boulder down a thousand-ren mountain"; when the time comes, with a slight push, the boulder rolls down with irresistible force. Hence, a skilled warrior seeks momentum, not blame, and thus can choose the right people and leverage the situation. Outstanding military leaders know how to leverage and create momentum: with 400,000 troops, they claim a million, marching in full force, intimidating the enemy into surrender without a fight. A show of force can be worth more than an army. Outstanding entrepreneurs also know how to leverage and create momentum: sudden "political events" and hot public news often bring considerable economic and social benefits to savvy businesspeople.

An excellent promotional plan must emphasize leveraging and creating momentum. Assessing the situation and skillfully choosing the right time to act is key to success and a crucial factor in ensuring the effectiveness of promotional efforts.

From the currently favored methods and techniques of "news generation," we can glimpse the methods and techniques of leveraging and creating momentum; in fact, they are essentially the same. Mastering the former means mastering the latter.

News generation, also known as "news events" or "media events," refers to an organization's conscious use of healthy and legitimate means to take actions that are both beneficial to itself and beneficial to the public, attracting the attention of news outlets and people from all walks of life. To enhance the organization's visibility and reputation, based on real events within the organization, planners promote, dig deeper, and organize a series of newsworthy events or activities to gain media coverage.

Compared with general news, "manufactured" news has the following characteristics:

① It does not happen by chance but is planned and arranged by professionals. In other words, general news is written by journalists, who are the drivers; "manufactured" news is driven by planners.

② Such news cannot be fabricated or falsified; like general news, it must have news value and be based on facts, but it is more dramatic and more likely to attract public attention.

③ This type of news is specifically designed to shape and improve the organization's image, and in most cases, it achieves this effect. General news can only increase visibility (for better or worse) but cannot improve the image (high visibility with low reputation can actually harm the organization's image).

News generation is an effective means for a company or organization to increase visibility and reputation. It is not about sensationalism or mystification; it must be based on facts, guided by journalistic standards, and beneficial to social interests and public life. At the same time, news generation is a creative activity without a fixed formula or method; it relies on the planner's broad knowledge, imagination, and practical experience. However, by systematically analyzing numerous promotional cases, we can still identify some common methods and techniques.

First, plan news around social hot topics and fashion elements. Social hot topics and trends change frequently. Planners need to dig from different angles and levels to find opportunities that both boost corporate visibility and product sales while aligning with what the public cares about most.

Second, package news in novel formats. Some news elements are basic, but through packaging and presentation, unexpected effects can be achieved. In 2009, during the Zhangjiajie Country Music Festival, an advertisement featuring the mayor as a spokesperson drew widespread media attention. The element of celebrity endorsement is not new, but the ad used an animated format to exaggerate the mayor's image, giving a fresh feel. If they had used real footage of the mayor instead of animation, the endorsement ad could have negatively impacted both the festival and the mayor's image.

Third, consciously associate celebrities with the organization to generate news. Authorities and socialites are themselves news figures, and the media often track their activities. Inviting them to participate in corporate PR events simultaneously creates news value and PR effects. Many companies invite government officials or celebrities to their groundbreaking or anniversary ceremonies, asking them to write inscriptions, cut ribbons, and hold press conferences to announce corporate goals or achievements. As a result, these events naturally attract media attention, achieving the organization's promotional goals.

Fourth, co-host activities with news organizations to increase exposure. When co-hosting events with news organizations, they will naturally go all out to publicize the content, giving the organization opportunities to appear in their coverage.

Fifth, news hype must not violate social ethics; otherwise, it may lead the company and brand into a crisis.
