Exploring Stage Design: Forms, Stage Structure, and Lighting Techniques

Published: 2024-10-12

Stage design holds its place and role in theatrical arts such as dance drama, traditional opera, drama, and opera. This article shares knowledge and experience about stage design.

1. Forms of Stage Design

The forms of stage design mainly include: stage set forms, stage modeling design, lighting forms, set modeling, and costume modeling. They encompass stage space and stage form.

Stage space includes the large theater on stage and the actors on the lit stage. Stage form is the most basic form in dance drama, expressing the characters through modeling.

2. Stage Structure

Stage structure is an important component of performing arts. It includes architecture, structures, actor costumes and props, and the relationship between the stage and the audience.

The stage structure of a dance drama refers to the structure on stage: including the front and back parts. The front part is the background space for main props, stage sets, and actor costumes.

Generally, a stage work sets up several basic front-stage elements, mainly including prop making, stage sets, and actor costumes.

3. Stage Design Requirements

Clear theme: The theme of a stage work reflects the artistic idea of a specific subject. Dance and drama usually use a central theme to run through the entire work. Dance drama performances often start from plot development, reflecting characters' personalities and emotions, and carrying a strong sense of the times.

4. Lighting Design Techniques.

The lighting design for drama can be summarized as one main line: expressing the theme, and controlling the three basic elements of emotion: color, light and shadow, and sound effects.

Color has a dominant impact on visual impact. Color should not only coordinate with the environment but also combine with the characters to enrich emotions and enhance the atmosphere.

Light and shadow: The relationship between light and shadow refers to the influence of the spatial position of lighting on the audience. The effect of light and shadow on the psychology of characters is directly related to the performance and display on stage.
