Evaluation Methods for Public Relations Planning Cases

Published: 2022-12-13

PR planning cases are one of the important ways to reflect the business capabilities of a PR company. So, how should we analyze and evaluate PR planning cases?

1. More concrete case descriptions: Generally, PR planning case materials cover main content such as project research, project strategy, project implementation, and project effects. Since readers of the materials (such as judges/experts) have not had the opportunity to participate in the event itself, evaluating whether a case is selected mainly relies on the descriptions in the materials submitted by the applicant, combined with their own prior experience (a priori experience), based on intuition. For example, for project effects, current data mainly includes superficial monitoring metrics like coverage volume, exposure volume, and interaction volume, but lacks in-depth analysis of topics, feature words, hotspots, etc. Therefore, current PR effectiveness evaluation mainly stays at the "output" level, and the portrayal of "results" needs improvement. For instance, before and after communication, we could analyze audience sentiment discourse, situational analysis, tendency analysis, and behavioral trajectory and tendency analysis. Additionally, to enhance the depth of insight into the content, we could add a Q&A session for whether a case can be selected, whether it is face-to-face in reality or using video/audio across space.

2. More realistic evaluation methods: PR planning case materials involve various industries, so the submission formats are diverse. How to conduct non-a priori rational evaluation of case content is an obstacle that selectors need to overcome. If case content is combined with annual development and event characteristics, it will enhance its realism, making it easier to comprehensively, deeply, and objectively understand the project situation.

3. More differentiated case selection scope: The rapid development of IT, internet, and other technologies has caused profound changes in PR and communication theories and practices, which will also be reflected in periodically held PR case competitions. There are differences in the characteristics and development of applications in different fields and industries, so the case scope can be more differentiated, such as selecting separately from corporate PR departments and PR agencies in different industries, government agencies and financial PR, medical and health industries, and the public sector.

4. Evaluation criteria emphasizing practical abilities: From the descriptive materials of PR planning cases, increasing the weight of assessing practitioners' abilities in summarizing and refining during actual combat in PR and communication behaviors will help PR industry practitioners actively improve their behavioral talents in actual work, such as: enhancing the imaginative ability to grasp behaviors in intuitive and diverse environments; strengthening the intellectual ability to synthesize and generalize the concept of a project in an intuitive and diverse background; improving the judgment ability to present the object contained in this concept in the intuitive and diverse background. The accumulation of these three abilities will provide a catalyst for the formation of an innovative and flourishing environment in PR.
